Kreyol Hip-Hop, like every other genre of Haitian music or Hip-hop in general, has been overwhelmingly dominated by male artists. However, a few female artists such as Eud, Stichez, and of course Beeju have emerged to make their presence in “Kreyol Hip-Hop”. Empress Beeju, born Kareen Bijoux Augustin in Petion Ville, is the latest artist taking the Haitian Music Industry by storm. She has been very resilient to occupy a spot next to male counterparts.
As a little girl she was influenced by Kreyol Hip-Hop; as a result, when she moved the United States at the age of 11, her passion and admiration for Kreyol Hip-Hop remain. She moved from New York to Ohio and currently resides in Florida; she has managed to keep a close relationship with Kreyol Hip-Hop.
She was encouraged by a close friend by the name of Obiatar Pierre and her friend and supporter Dr. Zoe to pick up the mic in 2006; since then, she has done collaborations with Dr. Zoe, Pistache Griye, Kiko and Gato. She constantly travels to Haiti where she often appears to give interviews on the reputed hip hop show, Raproche, as well as other Kreyol Hip-Hop radio shows. She has also appeared on TNH and “Kom Si Wow”. Her first major performance was at the Koze Kreyol Awards in Haiti.
Beeju is working relentlessly with tenacity to represent the woman’s voice that the Kreyol Hip-Hop is desperately lacking. She stays in the studio and constantly writing her rhymes. She’s currently working on her mixtape titled "Vwa Fanm", which will be out in the summer. The mixtape will featured various renown Rap Kreyol artists such as Dr. Zoe , Coogi of I&I, Oz’mosis of Sky’z da Limit, Masta Precha and so many others. She plans to release her first album by next year. Beeju pa vin jwe.
